Iterative Expression 2 years later

It is hard to believe that it has been 2 years since these pictures were taken.  We were back in Miami last week to see some good friends and it brought back memories of feverishly hanging 120 paintings in a day, staying out late with good friends, then flying to Massachusetts for a wedding and a reunion, then packing our whole life into a truck and driving non-stop to NC.  Just thinking about it makes me feel tired.  Anyways, I thought I would post some of these pictures, some of which were on facebook but never made it to my site. …

Orange!

There are two sets of prints here.  This first set was printed on 4/15/12.  The full array is up on the Prints page.  This first group uses 3 shades of turquoise, in different color iterations:

To get all of the variations I printed each screen twice in each color, then switched colors and repeated on the dry prints for each of the remaining screens.  I started printing the lightest shade, adding more turquoise for each layer.  Phthalo turquoise is one of my favorite colors. …

3/26/12 New Painting

Hard to believe it’s the end of March and this is the first painting of 2012, Number 423.  I have been focused on the prints since January so I haven’t spent much time actually painting.  It’s been a lot of fun but I needed to paint.  I am still planning a giant painting on this roll of canvas I have. The plan has been to go very heavily multilinear on that since I will have space to put a lot of lines.…

More drawings

I have been going through a lot of drawings while working towards this new painting.  These are a few recent drawings I found interesting.

Current favorites:

Some drawings

I have this giant roll of canvas and I am in the planning stage of a really big painting.  I have been doing a lot of drawing lately in preparation.  It should be about 6’x8′.  Drawing is such a big part of my process that I don’t often share.  I usually about 300-500 individual drawings for ever painting I complete.  Sometimes I will paint 2 or 3 off the same page but I feel I need to do at least this many before I find something that I like. …

The situation in the studio: hand colored prints

Hand printing is by nature an imperfect process.  Some of the prints come out perfect, others less so.  Since I have been out of practice and working in improvised facilities a lot of my prints have come out less than perfect.  I’ve been keeping these and experimenting with different ways of using them.  One of the first ideas I had was to hand color them with acrylic washes.  Here are a couple of the initial attempts:

Most of these prints were from the last print of that color. …

Variations in Registration and Color

My recent multi-linear paintings have all overlaid intersecting lines to create specific figures.  These have all been specific choices and also immediately whole; meaning that I draw the figure all at once and specifically choose which lines overlay when painting.  The recent series of prints have involved multiple separate whole figures overlaid to mimic the multi-linear effect of the paintings.

I say these are immediately whole because the drawings are done all at once in one continuous motion, and the overlay is chosen after, when I am painting.…

My wall for the 12×12 exhibit at Golden Belt

Here are the 4 pieces I completed for the 12×12 exhibit at Golden Belt:

All of the work for this show had to be 12×12 inches.  I do not normally work in a square aspect so I had to get a little creative.  My first inclination was to do square drawings as these pieces are easy to adapt to different sizes.  My paintings tend to be rectangular in shape and 12 inches is smaller than most paintings I have done.…

Further Complications

The name of the show, “Further Complications” relates to several things going on with me right now.  It describes the increased complexity of the figures in the paintings. It reflects the increased scope of work, for example the super grid.  It relates to my thinking about art this last year of isolation.  It describes the current economic realities that we are all dealing with and the uncertainty of national and global politics.  In essence the culmination of all these forces.

Further Complications in the Figures

People familiar with my process know that I do many sketches for each painting. …
